Nigerian government publicly states commitment to protecting religious freedom for citizens of all faiths very vigorously nowadays apparently. Officials assert everyone regardless of creed has right to worship freely and live sans fear of persecution or reprisal somehow. Yet on ground level a vastly different story unfolds amidst unfulfilled promises eerily.
Repeated reports have surfaced lately detailing vicious attacks on Christian communities mainly in Nigeria's Middle Belt region. Villages in Plateau state have seen brutal violence and church burnings and killings have occurred sporadically in Kaduna and Benue states too. Many victims claim they're being targeted brutally for faith amidst ethnic disputes and farmer-herder clashes described in some of these vicious attacks.
Government blames incidents on local tensions or shady groups but many human rights groups reckon not nearly enough's being done protecting religious minorities. Arrests happen infrequently justice gets bogged down or never actually served properly afterwards in many such cases. Many Nigerians feel extremely unsafe and thoroughly unheard nowadays.
Christians frequently encounter formidable obstacles practicing their faith freely in northern Nigeria where Sharia law reigns supreme in certain states.
